PTE Exam Guide: Format, Scoring, and Preparation Tips
PTE is an abbreviation for the Pearson Test of English, which is a test that measures a student’s level of English proficiency. Passing the test is mandatory for admission to foreign institutions or colleges where English is the only medium of instruction. Generally, countries like Canada, the USA, Australia, New Zealand, and the UK demand a PTE scorecard.
PTE Test Format:
The PTE test evaluates a candidate’s proficiency in four key areas: The four skills are Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening. The test has two modules:
- PTE Academic: This is for Student Visa & Immigration only.
- UK Government Tests: It comprises PTE Academic UKVI (Study & Work) and PTE Home (Live – Citizenship).
Additional information related to PTE:
- It is a two-hour online examination, and the results are processed and released within five working days.
- The exam is taken daily (excluding Sunday), and there are three possible time options per day.
- PTE scores are valid for two years.
- The scores are from 10-90 Bands for each module and the overall.
- As for the number of attempts, there is no limit.
- The score cards can only be viewed, downloaded or sent through a user ID and password.
- The last score obtained is used in admission, not the highest score.
This segment of the PTE Test assesses the speaking skills of the candidate and each test is videotaped by the test center.

In this segment, a candidate’s ability is tested according to the ability to complete the task most correctly using a wide variety of vocabulary and grammar. As mentioned before, the writing tasks in the Academic module differ from those in the General module.

The Reading section measures the capacity to read for the main idea, major points, details, scanning, comprehending logical arguments, and identifying writers’ opinions, attitudes, and purpose.

This section contains three large paragraphs from journals, magazines, and books. The content of these paragraphs is meant for those who plan to continue their education in foreign countries.
